Examples
A blue triad
From 225° the other corners are 345° and 105°: #E14169, a pink-red, and #69E141, a fresh green.
The classic triads
Red, yellow and blue is the traditional triad on a painter's wheel. On the digital HSL wheel the primary triad is red, green and blue at 0°, 120° and 240°.
Balancing the three
Choose one color for about 60% of the design, the second for 30% and the third for 10%. Lower the saturation of the largest area if the scheme feels loud.
Tips
- Use the 60-30-10 rule to decide how much of each color to use.
- Pair a triad with neutral backgrounds so the three colors can stand out.
Questions about the Triadic Color Generator
What is a triadic color scheme?
It uses three colors spaced evenly around the color wheel, 120° apart. The result is lively and balanced while keeping strong hue contrast.
Is a triadic scheme hard to use?
It can feel busy if all three colors appear at full strength. Let one dominate and use the other two as accents.
Do triadic colors have to be saturated?
No. Lower the saturation or raise the lightness of the colors for a softer version of the same scheme.
How is this different from tetradic?
A triadic scheme has three colors; a tetradic scheme has four, built from two complementary pairs.
