Aqeeb Studio is a reference and a set of free tools for working with color. Please read these notes so you know what the numbers and results can and cannot tell you.

Colors on screens and in print

Every color on this site is shown as a HEX code and as RGB and HSL values in the sRGB color space, which is the standard for the web. How a color actually looks depends on your screen, its settings, the surrounding light and your own eyes, so the same value can look slightly different on two devices.

CMYK values come from a simple mathematical conversion. They are a starting point for print work, not a prediction of the printed result, which depends on the paper, the inks, the press and the color profile used. Ask your printer for a proof before an important job.

    Color names

Named colors come from two sources: the color keywords defined in the CSS specification, and the XKCD Color Survey, a CC0 (public domain) dataset of colors that people named. Names are conventions. Different sources can give the same value different names, and the same name different values, and some survey names reflect popular usage rather than a standard. The “closest named color” shown for a custom value is the nearest match in this library by CIE76 color difference, and it is only a guide.

    Color blindness simulation

This simulation is an approximation intended for design testing and education. It is not a medical diagnostic tool and does not replace an eye examination. People with the same type of color vision deficiency can see colors differently, and a simulation on a normal screen cannot show exactly what any one person sees. If you think you may have a color vision deficiency, please speak to an eye care professional.

    Accessibility and contrast results

Contrast ratios follow the formulas in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.x. A result of “pass” means that the two colors meet the stated ratio, not that a page, product or document is accessible or meets any law, standard or contract. Accessibility also depends on font size, spacing, structure, keyboard use, screen reader support and much more. Where the law or a contract requires compliance, please involve an accessibility specialist.

    General information only

The guides and descriptions are written to be helpful and are simplified on purpose. They are not professional design, legal, medical or print-production advice. We try to keep the content correct and up to date, but we cannot guarantee that it is complete or free of mistakes. If you find an error, please tell us and we will look at it.
