How to use the Color Picker

  1. Click the color square to open your browser's picker, or type any color into the text field. HEX codes, rgb() and hsl() values all work.
  2. Watch the HEX, RGB, HSL, HSV and CMYK rows update together. You can also edit any row and the others follow.
  3. Choose Pick from screen, where your browser supports it, and click any color you can see on your display.
  4. Press Copy next to the value you need, or open the closest named color to read its full page.

A quick accessibility check

Under the values the picker states the contrast ratio with white and black text. For #4169E1 white text reaches 4.84:1 and black reaches 4.33:1, so white is the better label color on that blue.

Questions about the Color Picker

How do I find the HEX code of a color?

Choose the color with the square or the eyedropper, or type its RGB or HSL values. The HEX code is the first row of the results, and its Copy button puts it on your clipboard.

Why is there no Pick from screen button in my browser?

That button needs the EyeDropper API, which Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge provide. In other browsers use the color square or type the value.

Are the converted values exact?

HEX and RGB describe the same 24-bit color exactly. HSL, HSV and CMYK are standard mathematical conversions rounded to whole numbers, so converting back can differ by one step. CMYK here is a screen-based estimate, not a print profile.

Does the picker save my colors?

Recently picked colors are kept in your own browser's local storage so you can reuse them. They are never sent to a server.
