How to use the RGB to HSL Converter

Examples

Royal blue

rgb(65, 105, 225) is hsl(225, 73%, 57%).

Pure red

rgb(255, 0, 0) is hsl(0, 100%, 50%): hue 0°, fully saturated, mid lightness.

Mid gray

rgb(128, 128, 128) is hsl(0, 0%, 50%). When all three channels are equal the saturation is 0%.

Tips

  • HSL is the easiest format for building tints and shades by hand: change only the lightness.
  • If saturation is 0%, the color is a gray and the hue is not meaningful.

Questions about the RGB to HSL Converter

How is HSL calculated from RGB?

The largest and smallest channels give the lightness (their average) and the saturation (how far apart they are, relative to the lightness). The hue is an angle that depends on which channel is largest. The tool applies the standard formulas.

Is HSL the same as HSB or HSV?

No. They share the hue, but HSV and HSB use value or brightness, where 100% is the brightest version of the hue, instead of lightness, where 100% is white. The color converter shows HSV too.

Can I paste a whole rgb() string here?

Why do two different RGB values sometimes give the same HSL?

HSL is rounded to whole numbers, so colors that differ by less than one step can land on the same rounded value. The RGB and HEX values stay distinct.
