Examples

Finding a palette

Set 5 colors and the Pastel style, press Space a few times, lock the two you like and keep generating around them.

A background and its partner

Generate with the Dark style until a background candidate appears and lock it. Then switch to Light and keep generating until another color pairs well with it.

Stress-testing a layout

Random colors are a quick way to test a design or chart. If it still reads well with unexpected colors, it is robust.

Tips

  • Press Space instead of clicking: it is much faster when you are hunting for something specific.
  • Export the colors as CSS variables to drop a favorite set straight into a project.

Questions about the Random Color Generator

Is the generator truly random?

It uses your browser's random number generator, which is fine for design work but not designed for security.

How do the style filters work?

Each style limits the hue, saturation and lightness ranges, and then checks the result's classification. For example warm needs a warm hue, and pastel needs a light, soft color.

Why do some random colors look muddy?

Fully random colors often land at middle lightness with low saturation. The generator keeps saturation reasonably high, but muddy colors still appear. Just press Space again.

Does it remember my colors?

Only during your visit. A short history appears under the colors, and nothing is stored on a server.
