Examples

Five blues

Royal blue becomes #142F7F, #1E46BD, #4169E1, #7F9AEB and #BCCAF4: the base color in the middle with two darker and two lighter steps.

A calm interface

Use the lightest step for page backgrounds, the middle for buttons and the darkest for headings. The whole screen feels related.

Charts with one hue

Lightness steps show order or intensity well, such as low to high values on a map or a heat chart.

Tips

  • Keep at least three clearly different lightness levels so the palette has real contrast.
  • Add one complementary accent for call-to-action elements.

Questions about the Monochromatic Palette Generator

What is a monochromatic palette?

It uses one hue and varies the lightness, and sometimes the saturation. Everything looks related, which makes the result elegant and easy to get right.

Is a monochromatic palette boring?

It can be flat if every step is similar. Use a wide range of lightness and add a neutral or one accent color for emphasis.

How do the steps differ from tints and shades?

This tool changes the HSL lightness of the base color in even steps around it. The tints and shades tool mixes the base color with white, black or gray instead.

Will every step work for text?

No. Neighboring steps often have low contrast. Test every text and background pair in the contrast checker.
