- Treat the numbers as a starting point and ask your printer for a color-managed proof.
Examples
Royal blue
#4169E1 gives C 71%, M 53%, Y 0%, K 12%.
Orange red
#FF5733 gives C 0%, M 66%, Y 80%, K 0%, because it contains no cyan.
Forest green
#228B22 gives C 76%, M 0%, Y 76%, K 45%.
Tips
- Pure black on screen (#000000) is K 100% here, but print shops often prefer a rich black for large areas.
- Avoid relying on bright, saturated screen colors for printed brand materials without a proof.
Questions about the HEX to CMYK Converter
Is this CMYK exact for printing?
No. Real CMYK results depend on the printer, inks and paper. The tool uses the standard device-independent formula, which is a good reference. Ask your printer for a proof before a print run.
Why can some screen colors not be printed?
Screens mix light and can show very vivid blues, greens and oranges that most CMYK inks cannot reproduce. Those colors look duller on paper.
What does K stand for?
K is the key plate, which is black. Printers use black ink because it is cheaper and sharper than mixing cyan, magenta and yellow.
Should I design for print in RGB or CMYK?
Follow your printer's instructions. Some accept RGB files and convert them, others want CMYK. Either way, check a proof of important colors.
